Exa

Exa is Salesfinity's always-on default search provider — it powers List Builder search and AI column research with no key and no setup.

What the Exa integration does

Salesfinity's Exa integration is the default search engine behind the List Builder, and unlike every other data provider it requires no connection and no API key from you — it works the moment you open the product. Exa handles the open-ended half of prospecting: describing the kind of company or person you want in plain language, finding more companies like one you name, and reading the web to answer research questions about rows already on your list. When you ask the AI Companion to build a list and you have not named a provider, Exa is what runs.

Search and find-similar

  • Search for companies and people from a natural-language description rather than a fixed set of enum filters

  • Find companies similar to a company you name, without needing a structured filter that describes what makes them similar

  • Return results into a List Builder table alongside results from any other connected provider

Research that fills in custom columns

  • Back the AI research that populates custom columns you add to a list — questions like what a company sells, whether it runs a particular motion, or what a recent announcement said

  • Fetch page contents so a row can be filled from real source material instead of a guess

  • Answer per-row questions across a whole table so a column resolves for every account, not just the ones you check by hand

Always available

  • No connection step, no key to paste, no vendor contract to sign before you can build a list

  • Available as a fallback when a structured provider returns nothing for a query

  • Used as the starting point in the List Builder, with structured providers layered in when you name them

Common use cases

Building a first calling list before you have connected anything

A new team opens the List Builder on day one with no data vendor of their own. They describe the accounts they want in a sentence, Exa returns companies and people, and the list becomes a dialable calling list in the parallel dialer. Nothing had to be procured first.

Finding more companies like your best account

A rep names one customer that closed unusually fast and asks for companies like it. Exa's find-similar path returns comparable companies without the rep having to reverse-engineer which firmographic filters would have described that account. The result lands in a table where the rep can add columns and cut it down.

Researching every row in a list at once

An SDR manager adds a custom column to a 400-row account list — for example, what the company's primary product line is. Exa reads the web for each row and fills the column, so reps see the context on screen while dialing instead of tab-hopping to research mid-call.

How to connect Exa to Salesfinity

  1. There is nothing to connect. Exa is on by default for every Salesfinity team.

  2. Open the List Builder and describe the companies or people you want.

  3. Results are returned by Exa unless you name a different provider in your request.

  4. Add custom columns to the resulting table; Exa's research fills them in.

  5. If you later connect a structured provider like Prospeo, Sumble, or Clay in Settings → Integrations, you can name it in a request and Exa remains available as the fallback.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an Exa API key to use it in Salesfinity?

No. Exa is the only data provider in Salesfinity that needs no connection and no key from you. Every other provider — Prospeo, Sumble, Clay, Ocean.io, LeadIQ — is bring-your-own-key and stored per team.

Does Exa provide phone numbers for dialing?

Exa's role in Salesfinity is search and research, not contact enrichment. Phone numbers and email addresses come from Salesfinity's own enrichment or from a selected enrichment provider, and that step always requires your explicit approval before any credits are spent.

What is Exa better at than the structured providers?

Open-ended and descriptive queries. Prospeo, Sumble, and Clay match against fixed fields — job title, seniority, technology, headcount — so they are the accuracy pick when your criteria fit those fields exactly. Exa is what you use when your criteria are a description rather than a filter, or when a structured provider has no coverage for what you asked.

Can Salesfinity use Exa and another provider on the same list?

Yes. Salesfinity can route a search across several providers rather than depending on one, so results from a structured provider and results from Exa feed the same List Builder table. If one provider has no coverage for a query, the search can fall back to another.

What does Exa actually do with my list?

Two things: it finds the rows, and it fills in custom columns you add. Both feed the List Builder, which produces the dialable calling list your reps load into the parallel dialer.
